10/9 Reflection

On the third week of co-tutoring, I tutored in Strozier from 6-7:30pm. Right as I sat down with Danielle, the first student canceled their appointment. However, this gave us the opportunity to discuss what had occurred last week with the freshman student. Danielle explained to me that a session like that is not normal and probably will never happen again. I asked her what I can do if an appointment like that happens to occur again and whether or not I should end the appointment if things escalate, so she and another tutor talked about that with me and how to handle rude students.

The next student had scheduled an hour-long appointment. He was finishing up his final draft after his professor had revised his rough draft. The class was some type of environmental history course and the student was required to discuss one of the chapters and create an argument based off of the information presented. He told me he wanted to work on his introduction, thesis, sentence structure, and conclusion. I asked him to read his paper aloud. While reading, he noticed a few mistakes he had made (misplaced words, misspellings, etc.) and was grateful we had read through the paper. Once he was finished, we first worked on his introduction. His last sentence was not a specific enough thesis, so I helped him use other sentences in his introduction to make a more cohesive thesis. Then we moved a few other sentences around in order to keep the paragraph consistent after the changes to the thesis were made. After, we went to his conclusion and I told him just to be a little more specific when he says things like “these chapters.” Other than that, he really did not have any issues in his conclusion. Next, we worked on a paragraph with a lot of grammatical errors (he misused dashes and had incomplete sentences). We worked on organizing the information he presented due to his lack of clarity. Towards the end of his session, I did not see any more errors that needed to be addressed, as well as Danielle. The student said he felt confident in his work and therefore left the session early. Overall, the session was successful! Due to the session ending early, Danielle and I discussed the session and she allowed me to fill out the report afterwards. I feel a lot more confident in my abilities than before.
