Co-Tutor 9/30

I really enjoyed my tutoring session this week. It was easy to co-tutor with Colleen because we kind of started out that way. The first time I observed her she often times would ask me to jump in on ideas or ask me what I thought about something the student was writing. So, this week we did more of the same of that. Our first registered student didn't show up so Colleen and I had time to become familiar with each other and just talk until the next registered student came in. This was the student we were having issues with last week and it was obvious that something had changed that made him more comfortable to talk with us. He was on pain medication so it may have just been that, but he was more open and we didn't have to feed him ideas this time. However, it became clear that he was behind in the class due to medical reasons and Colleen was worried that he would have difficulty catching up. Our third registered student came in and we just talked comfortably with him for a while. He didn't have much that needed to be done, but he did want to show us an assignment for an online religion class that was confusing. After looking at the syllabus and the assignment rubric, both Colleen and I were still a bit thrown so we suggested that he talk to the professor. There was miscommunication between the student's thesis and what the professor thought it was, but when the student was talking to Colleen and I about it, he was very passionate and clear. I got excited (even though I've only had two sessions with him) when he pretty much broke down his entire paper and was talking to us about where he's getting his information. He was so enthusiastic about his topic; it was great to see. I actually then stayed an extra hour because we got a walk-in student who needed someone to look over a scholarship essay. The student has accomplished so much and was so driven that it came across easily in her essay. It almost brought us to tears, honest. I was glad that I stayed that extra hour because then I got to help someone with something so important and you could just tell how much she really wanted it and how much she deserved it. In regards to her essay, we just moved a couple of things around and repeated a lot of sentences aloud to hear how they flowed. Other than that, it was pretty much on point.
