9/16 Response

I think one of the biggest challenges I’ll face as a tutor will be making sure I’m doing my job correctly. All that we’ve been reading this semester states how easy it is to be an editor rather than a tutor when presented with an essay. The hard part is actually being a tutor and helping students better their writing, in the long run, not just for that specific paper. The fact that this has been such a large emphasis really gets me thinking about how I will do my job as a tutor to accomplish this.
I think another challenge that I might face is one that will occur once the tutoring sessions begin. Many students are concerned about their writing or need help to better their papers; they initially go to the tutoring center to get the help they need. There are also students that, although they bring themselves in, don’t want to work together with their tutor or are scared that we will be judging them based on their writing. I think it's very important to create a comfortable and welcoming environment where students can clearly point out the parts they want help with and work with us through the sections or papers they seek advice on. I also would like for students to feel comfortable enough to come back to me to review newer drafts of the same paper or bring to me other papers for completely different classes that need to be worked on.
I’m very excited to be shadowing a graduate student tutor. I think this will help me better understand the tutoring process, what I should do in my own tutoring sessions, and what to avoid in the sessions. I think shadowing someone will help me feel more comfortable and confident and will be the final step as I, myself, become a tutor.
